2011 BMW 328i xDrive or 2011 Audi A4?

Question by an: 2011 BMW 328i xDrive or 2011 Audi A4?
I am looking to purchase a new car for my son (a 17.5 year old high school student). I want to spend around $ 40,000 or a little less (meaning the price I would pay not the MSRP). I am not going to buy the car out right so lease and finance rates are not important, but I want a good car. Automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are musts, as is a sedan (4 doors) and safety. I would like the car within a few days and not weeks/months.

BMW:
-Premium Package (moon roof, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, universal garage door opener, interior mirror with compass, power front seats w/ driver memory, auto dimming interior and exterior mirrors, BMW assist with bluetooth, lumbar support)
-Interior: Black Dakota Leather
-Exterior: Jet Black
-Wheels: 17″ Light alloy V-spoke wheels style 285-with all-season run-flat tires
-STEPTRONIC automatic transmission

**I got the car with all the above features quoted at $ 38,000 and in stock

(also possibly considering Naviagation with iDrive and BMW Apps)

AUDI:

I am a lot less familiar and have not even seen or test drove an Audi at a dealer yet. Me and my son loved the ride and feel of driving the 3 series, and the interior and exterior were pretty modern and sleak (thumbs up).

I would like a similar Audi A4 and I know that the price will be around the same (but Audi may have more features in that price like Nav). But I think the major downside is in the Audi’s engine.

If anyone has insight, comments, or suggestions on which car and which features/options/packages to go for please “Answer” below. Thank you all

Considering that every new driver abuses/wrecks their first car, it’d go with neither. Get him something reliable and used until he’s gotten his first accident out of the way and has some experience.

Otherwise, get him whatever you want. He’s a 17 y.o. getting a 40k car, he shouldn’t be complaining no matter what he gets.

Both of those cars are extremely fast. They are sport cars. A new inexperienced driver has no business being behind the wheel of one of those. He needs something that has a 5 star crash rating. Something that has steel in it. He would wrap that audi around something real quick. It needs to be more safe than awesome.

Go for the bmw 328xi coupe and make sure to get the technology package with ipod connector or your son will be pissed. On second thought you said you wanted a car that wants AWD so because of that go for the Audi as their Quattro system is superb compared to XDRIVE.

So far you’ve only done part of the job, You priced the Audi and found out the price is comparable to the BMW with more content. The most important thing is the drive, when you drive an audi (while very good) it’s not a bmw. I’d give up Nav and BT right away just to get the feel of a bmw.

Don’t forget, when you buy a new bmw you get 4 years of free maintenance. Consider over 4 years, the audi will cost you an additional approx. 3000 (according to edmunds) and the bmw 0.

Just go drive the audi and i’m sure you’ll see what i mean.
